During migration the wildebeest are interrupted  by the various predators along the way .The unlucky are eaten by the crocodiles in the Mara River as their prey, then the successful ones can be waited by the big cats like the lions as their next meal, but still the resilient ones can still stand and survive.


In this month most of the herds are in Serengeti National park in Tanzania. The are tending to move south from north east to the regions near Lake Ndutu. Although there are millions of wildebeest, zebras and Antelopes in Serengeti National park they don’t tend to move as one group as a single herd but break into herds of thousands to hundreds of thousands moving group of herds at a time.

February and March

This is mostly the calving season everyday thousands of calves are born and they are vulnerable and easy target to the predators. The big cats are the major predators but there are also other hit and run predators such as Hyenas, Jackals and wild dogs adding up to a spectacular hunting skills.


This is the beginning of the long rains and most  of the herds tend to move less and enjoy the green grasses. This is the action filled rutting season where males are seen to be jostling and fighting for the rights to mate.


During this period the herds are seen to be moving move faster in large group sometimes their herds covering up to almost 40 kilometers or more moving up into central Serengeti National park.


In May large herds in their numbers are already in Central Serengeti. They are getting ready for their toughest journey, during this period some of the herds may have  split up and already crossing the Grumeti river.


This is the beginning of the spectacular wildlife behavior because during this period most of the leading pack have already crossed into Kenya.The other packs are all moving north of Serengeti National park heading to Kenya Masai Mara National Reserve.

It is sometimes impossible to predict the exact crossing time or period of the animals because they entirely depend on the rains but sometimes it is just their unexplained unpredictable behavior. This is considered the best time to experience the great migration. It is the time to witness the dramatic river crossing phenomenon. If you had tracked the migration right from Tanzania, you’ll need a passport to cross over to Kenya; the wildebeest are exempt. The animals move into Masai mara and other private and community conservancies that join the Masai mara national reserve to form the Mara ecosystem.


The herds after crossing over into Masai Mara National Reserve they break into smaller herds. November and December

The herd begin to move into the North Eastern part of Serengeti National park as this is the beginning of the short rains. The Wildebeest start again to migrate from the deprived grasslands of Masai mara into Serengeti National park.
