Uhuru park

Occupying 12.9 hectares, Uhuru Park is a leisure park close to Nairobi’s central business district. Kenya’s first president, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, gazetted and declared Uhuru Park open to the public on May 23, 1969, symbolising the nation’s independence. The Mau-Mau Freedom Fighters Monument remembers those who were tortured during the colonial era and is located in the park. In order to undergo reconstruction, the park was closed to the public in 2022 by the now-defunct Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS). The renovation project was led by the Ministry of Defence.

Nairobi County has periodically used the park to hold events, such as the Nairobi Festival in 2022 and 2023, while the improvements were being completed. Prior to the restorations, Uhuru Park was a popular location for political gatherings in Kenya. The park is well known for holding sizable political gatherings before general elections.

The recently renovated Uhuru Park offers park visitors a variety of recreational and leisure opportunities with its well-kept grass, well-maintained trees, improved paths, and green areas. There is a children’s play area with bouncing castles and merry-go-rounds, an events garden shaped like Nyatiti, and an outdoor amphitheatre with an audio-visual screen.

In honour of the late Prof. Wangari Maathai, a more clearly defined liberation Corner has been erected, and the famous Nyayo statue and the monuments honouring the Mau Mau liberation fighters have been refurbished. A monument remembering medical personnel who perished in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic is also located in the park. The artificial lake has been converted into a waterfront space featuring a Swahili restaurant, while the lily pond has been transformed into Uhuru Aqua cape, an aquarium.

A botanical area including instructional labels on flowers and plants has been established to highlight Kenya’s floral richness. There are also now management offices, event spaces, restrooms, areas for physical activity, and tourist attractions available. Other highlights include two upscale restaurants, various cafés, a dancing fountain along Processional Way, and terraced sitting places with a biosphere-like appearance. An old aeroplane that has been imaginatively converted into a chic, contemporary restaurant is a noteworthy addition to the recently renovated Uhuru Park. It adds a unique touch to the park’s atmosphere.

Additionally, Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) added creative features to the park, like ice cream parlours at different locations. The purpose of these parlours is to offer tourists leisure options and to improve the park’s attractiveness. They are built utilising old buses and other antique materials.
