Nairobi national park is situated in a short drive from the city center and the main entrance to the park is along Langata Road, the park is located in South – central region of Kenya in Nairobi the capital city of Kenya, 5 miles (8 kilometers) south of Nairobi. The park covers an area of 45 square miles (117 square kilometers) and lies about 5,000 – 6,000 feet (1,500 – 1,800 meters) above the sea level.

Nairobi national park is a unique Kenya safari destination for being a home to the highest density of black rhinos, the park is a rhino sanctuary hosting about 76 indigenous black rhinos and 13 white rhinos. These animals are endangered species and they were transferred to Nairobi national park so as to protect them from poachers and for conservation purposes.

Nairobi national park is a home to 80 species of mammals including 39 lions and 90 rhinos, 40 different amphibians and reptiles. Mammals in Nairobi national park include lions, leopards, black and white rhinos, waterbucks, impalas, elands, coke’s hartebeests, Grant’s gazelles, impalas, Masai giraffe, waterbucks, Thomson gazelles, Burchell’s zebras, baboon, African buffaloes among others.

History of Nairobi national park
Nairobi national park was established and gazetted in 1946 making it to be one of the oldest parks to be established in both Kenya and East Africa, for the past 75 years. Nairobi national park has been the setting for numerous studies on wildlife behavior, ecology and conservation management.
Nairobi national park was establishment as results of efforts of Mervyn Cowie, a conservationist who pioneered the national park system in Kenya and established the park as the nation’s first conservation area. Nairobi national park is approximately 7 kilometers (14 miles) south of the center of Nairobi, City – Kenya’s capital city and largest city.

Nairobi national park covers an area of 117.21 square kilometers (28,963 acres), the park is fenced by electric fence only to the East, North and West where it directly borders densely populated city suburbs, an electric fence was put in place in order to keep the wildlife from roaming into the city. The unfenced south boundary of the park is formed by the Mbagathi River and is open to the Kitengela Conservation Area which is located immediately south of the park and the Athi-Kapiti plains. The southern boundary creates a route for the animas to freely roam from Nairobi national park to the neighboring protected areas.

HOW TO GET TO AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK
Nairobi national park is situated within the limits of Nairobi city and is situated just 6 miles from the city center, one can access the park by public vehicle or private vehicle.
By public means of transport, there are buses such as Matatu 125 or 126 from Nairobi Railway Station which drop you at the main gate of the park. From the railway station to Nairobi national park, it is a drive of about 35 minutes.
